Toromont CAT Thunder Bay and our Corporate HR team have aligned to sponsor Thunder Wolf Racing, a group of fourth year Mechanical Engineering students at Lakehead University with a passion for speed.  The Thunder Wolf Racing team is a self-sustained development program within Lakehead University. Each year a team of 20 mechanical engineering students are selected to compete in the Formula SAE competition held at the Michigan International Speedway. These students commit over 2000 hours each in an 8-month journey to design, manufacture and compete against 100+ North American Universities abiding by a set rule book.

On April 22 Toromont Thunder Bay hosted the FSAE team at the branch.  Team Captain Rhys Hooke and 11 of his teammates where invited to tour our facility inclusive of the Tractor, Mining and Welding shop bays, REMAN North, Power Systems, and Parts/Warehouse Department.  Preparations were also made for students to operate a 330-07 excavator in a controlled section of the yard, which was a definite highlight of the tour.  Tour guides consisted of our supervisors Roger Goulet, Andy Jarzabek, Lyndy Stajkowski, Andre Furlanetto and Wayne Weeden.  Great work team!

It was motivating and inspiring to have the next generation of bright minds in our facility eager to learn more and in awe of the level of service we provide our industry. The Toromont team was equally impressed by the FSAE team presentation outlining the major focus areas of the design including chassis, engine, suspension, brakes and aerodynamics. The group highlighted the importance of proper project management, strong partnerships with suppliers, budgetary constraints, entrepreneurship, and team building.

Now it is crunch time.  The team is working through a tight schedule to complete the build, test, and adjust the performance in time for mid-May competition. In true Toromont spirit, we made sure that Safety remains their top priority, and that second place is not an option.

For those interested in learning more about the Thunder Wolf Racing team and the LUFSAE program, links have been provided below.  This has proven to be a valuable investment in the community of Thunder Bay and Lakehead University. Toromont CAT remains to be an industry leading company and a significant employer in the communities we operate in, but there are always more ways we can ensure our brand is well known by building strong connections and references.  As an aside, we have sparked some interest with a few students now interested in the Management Trainee program.  Win / Win.
