2022 SKILLS ONTARIO

May 9, 2022, 14:36 PM by Marilyn Burgoyne
The Skills Ontario Competition took place on Thursday April 28th at Centennial College. We want to celebrate our Apprentice competitors for participating in this year’s Skills Ontario Competition.

The Skills Ontario Competition took place on Thursday April 28th at Centennial College.  We want to celebrate our Apprentice competitors for participating in this year’s Skills Ontario Competition.  Mathieu Marin (Timmins Branch) and Dorian Guzman-Vlug (Concord Branch) were two among the ten competitors in the Heavy Equipment Service category.  Also participating this year on behalf of Centennial College was Alessandro Montoya (Future Concord Branch Apprentice) and on behalf of Centennial College/Battlefield Equipment Rentals, Malcolm Matwijec, Barrie Branch.

Skills Ontario was supported by multiple Heavy Equipment OEM’s by providing both machines and technical support for each task.  Each dealer had an assigned technical area of focus such as; electrical, hydraulic, engine, powertrain and precision measuring.  At the Toromont Cat station, there were Two CAT 926M Medium Wheel Loaders and the technical area of focus was Engine Troubleshooting. A variety of complex and intricate challenges were carefully placed within the wheel loaders for each competitor to work through.  Each competitor was judged on their ability to work safely, problem solve, record accurate measurements, follow repair procedures and document the work performed.

After all of the scores were tallied, it was announced that Malcolm Matwijec, Centennial College/Battlefield Equipment Rentals placed 1st overall and took home the Gold Medal.

On behalf of everyone at Toromont Cat, we want to thank our participants for their efforts and also congratulate Malcolm Matwijec for this well-deserved accomplishment.

We also want to thank our Technical Training Team for representing Toromont Cat in the Skills Ontario Competition by developing complex engine faults in order to challenge the competitors troubleshooting and repair skills and acting as judges; Brad Harris, Darryl Herreman, Anthony Wren and Andrew Beduz.
